The Centre for Forensic Education is the multi-professional training and development resource for the Suffolk Forensic Service, and a partnership educational provider to the University of Middlesex.

How it all works

When you decide to apply, please click on the application form link below. This will take you to a confidential on line application form. Please complete the form and click the apply button. Your application will be processed within 28 days.
Once you are enrolled on the course, you will receive an e-mail with a confidential and personal log in name and password for the course website. Please do not share this with others, as this will compromise the confidentiality of the system and your personal scores, feedback and assignment work. You will also be told of the allocation of a personal and course tutor.
Once enrolled, please fill in the entry evaluation questionnaire. This is very important for the purpose of evaluating both the course, and your progress. You may then start the modules.

The first module taken must be the Foundation Module, Anybody's Daughter, Somebody's Son, which is presented each semester for new starters. The remaining modules do not make sense unless you have completed this first, and the assignment arrangements are described in this section.

Workload

The workload for each certificate is 300 hours of reading, study, research and work based learning practice. It includes the time allocated for on-line forum participation and mentoring and supervision at work, and the assessment tasks.
Each certificate module therefore requires about 60 hours of study, practice and application.

This may seem like a huge commitment, but it is worth remembering that the course is designed to fit around your individual needs at work, and to extend and compliment the work with mentally disordered offenders that you are already likely to be doing.  Learning proceeds at a pace that you are comfortable with, and the Internet based distance learning framework means that you can catch up with debate and materials at any time.

Academic Credit

The course has been assessed by Middlesex University, and upon satisfactory completion, students will be awarded a Certificate or Diploma in Forensic Studies issued by the Centre for Forensic Studies.  These awards carry with them transferable academic credits, which can be counted towards degree programmes both at Middlesex University, or indeed, any other UK university or degree awarding college.

The Introductory Certificate           merits    30 NFQ Academic Credits at Level   2 (5)
The Intermediate Certificate       merits    30 NFQ Academic Credits at  Level  2 (5)
The Advanced Certificate            merits    30 NFQ Academic Credits at Level   3 (6)
The Diploma                              merits    60 NFQ Academic credits  at Level   4 (7)

Advanced Certificate and Diploma credits can be submitted towards a Master's Degree in Work-based Learning.

Assessment

For the  Certificate Scheme, the emphasis is on practical learning and doing. Assessment is by appraisal of a work-based learning task.
In an activity appraisal, you apply a standard learning template to an appropriate  forensic activity in your workplace.

How does assessment work?

When you enrol on the course you are required to nominate a workplace mentor. A workplace mentor should be a supervisor, manager or experienced colleague who is competent and willing to undertake the following tasks:
  • Provide confirmation of your status and employment/student status.
  • Certify that your workplace learning records are accurate and truthful
  • Certify (to the best of their ability) that you have complied with the regulations regarding plagiarism, and that submissions are your own work.
  • Certify that work-based learning tasks that you have selected are appropriate to your role and duties in your organisation.
  • Provide feedback on the completed assignments to the course tutor.

Workplace mentors are volunteers; please remember to ask for agreement to put his/her name forward!  Organisations which provide mentoring for learners are entitled to a 10% rebate on course fees.

A sample work-placed mentor agreement is available by clicking the picture link below.

The Assessment

Assessment activities are varied and designed to explore the learning set in imaginative and highly practical ways. All the assessments are designed to result in the creation of a useful and relevant resource which could be put to use in the learner's organisation, or as part of the learner's personal portfolio of development.
Pass mark is 50% and ONE retake is permitted, after a minimum period of one month.

The Diploma Scheme

In the Diploma Scheme, the expected academic level of discourse is higher. Students cover similar curriculum material as the certificate courses, but the required level of detail and analysis is more advanced. Activities may include observation and supervision of practical interventions of other staff and answering questions both theoretical and operational on issues of best practice. Pass mark is 50% and a retake is possible after a month.
